Dallas Industries Introduces Centering Reel with Thread Up Drive

A Midwest manufacturer of overhead doors has taken delivery of a customized Dallas non-motorized centering reel, Model DJR-20,000 x 36. The company manufactures aluminum skin overhead garage doors in multiple sizes, embossing patterns and styles. Because garage door outer material gage is thin, caution was taken to not put stress on the material during the pull off process. In addition, the company used an integrated manufacturing process so the coil handling system needed to have flexibility built in with both the equipment and its controls.

The Dallas automatic centering reel is designed to handle coils up to 20,000 lbs, with a 36" maximum coil width, 72" O.D. and 20" to 24" I.D. range. It has a threading drive designed to support the coil, permitting smooth unwinding of the material. Coil loading is simple because the reel support arms contract, the company said. This can allow for ease of coil loading and automatic expansion of the coil I.D. centers and holds it in balance. A drum type reel mandrel expands and contracts with a wedge design arrangement that regulates the expansion pressure eliminating distortion of the coil I.D. The support arms have coil width scales to aid in centering the coil and a custom 36" O.D. back plate helps in positioning them.

The unit has a dual-pressure adjustable air brake, which has a special control to minimize stress on the light, wide-gage material during the pull-off process. The spindle height was customized to the existing leveler to achieve a proper pull-off angle. A hydraulic drive threads the material up into the leveler.

The system is also equipped with a new DallaSmart Control package that performs a variety of functions. It synchronizes the coil-centering reel to an existing Dallas servo feed with a gag feed sequencing head including programming of its multi-step indexing capabilities. A CPU drives the IO for tooling engagement. The DallaSmart control system is also able to call up a variety of jobs and different door styles with all jobs stored in memory.
