Applied Fusion Installs Second Super-Large Electron Beam Welder



Applied Fusion has announced the completed installation of the company's second 8-axis CNC large electron beam welder, as well as an additional pro-beam electron beam welder from Germany.

The new 8-axis CNC large electron beam welder (imported from Germany to Applied Fusion's San Leandro, CA, facility) provides a larger working envelope due to its 125-ton, 64-cubic meter vacuum chamber. A 65" tiltable rotary table with a Z-axis movement opens up a wide range of part options. Faster vacuum pumping speeds enable higher throughput and welding of many smaller parts in a single pump-down cycle.

"This increases our capabilities and generates faster turnaround times, all while maintaining our high standards of quality and performance."

"Our new welder opens the door to a better customer experience," said Musgrove. "Our operators can begin welding sooner thanks to faster pumping speeds, and increased volume capabilities create manufacturing flexibility. Overall, this saves time and money for us, and more importantly, the customer. Applied Fusion continues to assist customers with material selections and joint designs with the full capacity to design and manufacture tooling and fixturing in-house."

The pro-beam, Applied Fusion's second new/high-tech machine, is the company's sixth electron beam welder. It has more capabilities and a larger working chamber. "Reaching full vacuum in ~11-12 minutes, it is two to three times faster than previous systems," said Musgrove. "This allows quicker turnaround time between jobs. Also, due to the large table/working area, either large parts can be processed or a combination of parts can be ganged on the table for processing, resulting in cost savings. The pro-beam utilizes a Siemens control. The control and software from pro-beam get the operators up to speed quicker than the previous systems."
