SWI Debuts Dayton, OH, Regional Showroom at Open House

Shawn Ferguson of SWI discusses the LPM machining center designed for small lot machining.

Shawn Ferguson demonstrates the easy to learn and use ProtoTRAK CNC.

SWI Partners Widia and Kennametal also exhibited at the open house.

Nearly 100 visitors attended the grand opening of SWI's Dayton, OH, showroom.

Nearly 100 visitors toured Southwestern Industries' (SWI) new Dayton, OH, showroom during a two-day open house. Visitors were provided with refreshments and witnessed numerous demonstrations of TRAK lathes, bed mills, knee mills and SWI's latest product offering, the LPM.

The LPM is the first SWI model to be fitted with an automatic tool changer (16-station) and is a VMC designed specifically for small lot machining. "It features the company's exclusive ProtoTRAK CNC, which does not require operators to have G-code knowledge and therefore lessens a shop's dependence on CAM programmers, who can become a bottleneck in high mix, small lot environments," said a company spokesperson. "Another important LPM feature that helps make high-mix, small lot machining feasible is its quick change-over capability provided by the Jergens Ball Lock fixturing system that is integrated into its 35-3/8 inch x 19-5/8 inch table. With this system, the operator always knows the datum of the part or parts relative to one of the three primary ball locks built into the table. So, once the initial set-up has been completed and the dimensional accuracy of the machined part confirmed, it can be repeated at any time with the LPM ready to go within a few minutes rather than hours. This is because when a program is saved, the LPM ProtoTRAK CNC PMX control not only saves the process information (and any program notes) but also the datum positioning data."

The PMX can be programmed in background mode ("staged" mode) for a future job while it is already machining a part on the table. It provides flexibility in terms of file types and file storage, and encourages continuous improvement by way of updating stored notes and photographs within the program that encompass set-ups, tooling and other useful information relating to current and repeat orders. According to the company, all of this information is instantly accessible via the PMX control.

The Dayton, OH, showroom is the third showroom opened by SWI within the last year and is located at 5685 Webster Street, Dayton, OH. The two other showrooms are located in New England (167 Memorial Drive, Shrewsbury, MA) and at the corporate headquarters in southern California (2615 Homestead Place, Rancho Dominguez, CA).

To arrange an appointment to visit an SWI showroom, contact a local SWI representative or SWI's corporate offices in Rancho Dominguez, CA.
