New Control Console Incorporates Input from Users

The new Hurco MAX 5 control console that was introduced at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) will be integrated into Hurco mills during 2015. The MAX 5 console features bigger, brighter LCD touchscreens with 19" displays and resolution of 1,280 x 1,024. This console also contains multiple ergonomic features that are designed to enhance the shop-floor programming experience. The MAX 5 control is equipped with three remote jog options: the premium wireless jog wheel, the advanced jog wheel with LCD screen and the standard jog wheel.

"Hurco engineers spent thousands of hours perfecting the control console and leveraged the latest technology available to enhance the user experience," said Maggie Smith, Marketing Manager at Hurco Companies, Inc. "Since we consider our customers to be the true experts in usability, we hosted a series of usability tests to fine-tune the design," continued Smith. According to Smith, the company incorporated more than 80 suggestions into the final version of the console. This customer input considerably contributed to the increase in the ergonomics and usability of the console.

One of the new WinMax software features of the MAX 5 control is AdaptiPath, a conversational pocketing feature used in high-end CAD/CAM packages that increases metal removal rates, supports rest machining, reduces cycle time and extends tool life due to controlled engagement cutting.

According to the company, AdaptiPath creates a smooth tool path motion, controls chip load, provides constant tool engagement and includes rest machining. With rest machining, larger diameter tools can be used to efficiently remove material, followed by a rest machining pass that uses a smaller cutter to access the areas of the feature that the larger tool could not access. The faster material removal significantly reduces cycle time, especially for pocketing applications.

"Our test cut results showed that AdaptiPath was 60% faster: 02:21 with AdaptiPath compared to 06:09 without it," added Smith.

"While Hurco is known for conversational programming, the MAX 5 control is equally powerful for industry standard NC," said a company spokesperson. "The console has multiple software features that benefit NC shops, such as the new Job List feature that allows users to group files together and run them sequentially without operator intervention." Job List promotes automation, lights-out machining, program stitching, file bundling and adaptive processes.
