New Generation of Crankshaft Grinding

The new CrankGrind from SCHAUDT is a machine designed for high-speed grinding of crankshafts. CrankGrind is a twin cross slide machine for grinding of crankshaft main and pin bearings. The twin cross slides facilitate high-speed grinding. This allows for the simultaneous machining of adjacent bearings with two grinding wheels due to greatly reduced minimum wheel spacing.

The bed of the machine is made of Granitan for thermal stability and dynamic vibration damping. Grinding speeds can go up to 200 m/s (39,000 ft./min.). The Z-axis guideways utilizes StuderGuide for accuracy and vibration damping. The X-axis is highly dynamic with vibration damping hydrostatic guideways with linear motors. The water and oil-proof dripping tray of the CrankGrind is directly integrated into the machine bed to eliminate possible tripping hazards and move the liquid back in the circulation.

Grinding length capacity is 650 mm or 25.6". Maximum grinding wheel dimension is 600 x 50 mm or 23.6" x 2.0". The CrankGrind is equipped with a ball bearing spindle with a direct drive motor and automatic wheel balancing. There are three different wheel guards available which are supporting customer orientated solutions. When grinding crankshaft pin bearings, an important requirement is for the grinding wheel diameter of 600 mm to have enough clearance.

The control is a Siemens Sinumerik 840D sl with the SCHAUDT WOP-G software for crankshaft grinding including a user-oriented set-up interface. Roundness measuring and correction with Fenar L can be performed directly in the machine with evaluation via WOP-G. Also, the software controls the coolant pressures and flow at different stages in the crankshaft grinding process. Feeds and speeds are controlled via a larger number of grinding steps during one plunge. Special grinding cycles for grinding shoulders, faces and radii are also a feature of the WOP-G.

Two workhead alternatives are available for the CrankGrind. As a standard, the machine has a table-mounted spindle with a direct drive servomotor. After releasing the clamping, the workhead can easily be moved on an air cushion. As an option, the workhead can be equipped with a larger motor with higher torque capability. Both variations are also available on a sliding axis to facilitate fast automatic loading and unloading of crankshafts.

The clamping force of the standard sliding tailstock of the CrankGrind is continuously adjustable. The design has been optimized to provide stiffness for supporting the crankshaft alongside fast tailstock positioning. An optional tailstock can be designed as a second workhead axis for larger crankshaft components.

Three dressing unit options are available: integrated in the tailstock with straight dresser, integrated in the tailstock with cup dresser and table mounted with cup dresser using the entire grinding length of 650 mm (25.6").

The coolant application of the CrankGrind comes with main coolant nozzles, lower coolant nozzles and cleaning nozzles optimized for laminar stream and low consumption of coolant. Also available are frequency-controlled coolant pumps for less power consumption.

The grinding wheels can be conveniently changed from the back of the machine without the need to climb inside the machine. The design also allows for manual loading without the use of a pedestal in front of the machine. The machine can also be fully automated using the loader hatch incorporated in the roof of the machine.
