Haas Automation's EC-1600 Series HMCs are 50-taper machining centers with a maximum part capacity of 10,000 lbs. (4,536 kg). "The machines recently underwent a complete redesign, to make them faster and more reliable, while maintaining the large work envelopes and high performance valued by shops handling larger work," said a company spokesperson.
The standard EC-1600 features a 64" x 50" x 32" (1,626 x 1,270 x 813 mm) work cube, while the EC-1600ZT adds 8" (203 mm) of Z-axis travel to accommodate larger parts and longer tools. Both machines now have a 30 HP (22.4 kW), 7500 RPM spindle standard - with a 10,000 RPM option - and rapids have increased by 40% to 750 IPM (19.1 m/min). The tool changer was totally redesigned, and is now 20% faster, and all air and lubrication systems have been consolidated into one module. The EC-1600s also have new standard features engineered for easier operation and higher productivity.
Using Finite Element Analysis, Haas engineers optimized the EC-1600 design to produce a machine that is more rigid, and cuts better than its predecessor. The base and saddle are a single casting, to make the machine easier to level and more stable. The column was optimized for geometry and rigidity, and to simplify the machine. The spindle and gearbox were redesigned to make them more compact and easier to service, and the Z-axis waycover was redesigned to increase strength and improve durability.
High-productivity options for the EC-1600s include an integrated 4th-axis platter with a 30" (762 mm) platter diameter and 10,000 lbs. (4,536 kg) weight capacity. The fourth axis easily positions very large parts to nearly any angle for machining, or provides fully interpolated motion for contouring. Other high-productivity options include a 10,000 RPM spindle, high-speed machining software with full look-ahead, high-pressure through-spindle coolant systems, wireless probing (tool and work offset) and more.
