Chipbreaker Turning Inserts for Difficult to Machine Materials

The SF and SM geometries support turning of difficult to machine materials.

Dormer Pramet now offers the Pramet SF and SM geometries for machining of high temperature alloys and stainless steel.

The SF geometry features a sharp positive geometry with inclination cutting edge of 14.5° and is suitable for finishing applications in continuous cut with very low cutting forces. The SM chipbreaker is a wear-resistant, universal geometry for medium machining (finishing up to roughing) suitable for continuous and interrupted cut.

Both chipbreakers are suitable for materials with poor machinability such as stainless steels, mild steels and high temperature alloys. The SF and other geometries are available in a variety of grades and have been designed to promote low cutting forces and prevent work hardening, reducing the risk of vibration when turning thin-walled components.

In addition to the geometries, two new turning grades are now available. The PVD coated Pramet T6310 grade features enhanced cutting edge reliability and strength with intermediate Cobalt content substrate for additional hardness and increased abrasion resistance, delivering users prolonged tool life. The Pramet T6310's triple coating provides durability for higher cutting speeds when machining stainless steel, heat-treated and hardened materials. It is suitable for use with the SM and SF geometries, as well as Pramet's existing NF and RM geometries.

These products are suitable for use in applications where they are subjected to high heat and corrosion, for example in the general machining, oil and gas, automotive, medical industry, marine and power generation sectors.
