April 22-25: Pemamek to Discuss Automated Welding Capabilities at IPF 2024

Pemamek LLC, a North American subsidiary of Finland-based Pemamek Ltd., will have welding automation experts available to discuss PEMA solutions for offshore wind manufacturing in Booth 929 at the 2024 International Partnering Forum (IPM) Conference April 22 through April 25, 2024, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, LA.

For more than 50 years, Pemamek has specialized in designing and manufacturing intelligent welding automation systems, such as welding platforms and rollerbeds capable of handling massive structures for offshore wind tower and foundation manufacturers. "Entire production lines integrate everything from plate lengthening lines to groove preparation, and state-of-the-art welding processes can be delivered in one turnkey package," said a company spokesperson. "Difficult-to-weld structures comprising not only large-scale monopiles, but floating platforms, and secondary steel structures with even the most complex geometries can also be joined by combining a customized selection of material handling and adaptive welding technologies."

The thick heavy plates found in most monopile and floating platforms must be welded together perfectly to retain their strength and ability to hold towers weighing in numerous metric tons. A long stick-out tandem head combined with a semi-narrow gap SAW welding technique is recommended for plates thicker than 50 mm to reduce seam volume and decrease the amount of filler material needed. Pemamek’s 100- to 1,000-ton rollerbeds are designed to handle this process, featuring a hydraulic anti-creep function to prevent axial movement during welding. Multiple rollerbeds can be included in the overall welding system for optimal alignment when joining the sections of the monopile.

“Welding engineers can preset all welding parameters, even for the most complex tower configurations,” said Michael Bell, Sales Director, Pemamek North America. “Several welds can be performed at the same time by one operator, working from digital measurements taken from the actual workpiece. The guesswork is eliminated and there will be virtually no mistakes with the weld with our adaptive fill technology. This is crucial when joining large plates that will be placed in harsh marine conditions.”

The PEMA Flange Fitting (FF) Station can be added to the workshop configuration, enabling fast, safe and accurate fitting and welding of flanges to wind tower and monopile foundation sections. The FF station is flexible enough to handle many different variations of flange designs and can be integrated with PEMA Column & Boom, which enables welding to be done in the same place, reducing weld time and increasing welding efficiency.
