50 Years of Change: From Typewriters to CNC Grinders: Woman-Owned Fridley Manufacturer NTM Celebrates Five Decades of Precision Tooling, Service
December 31, 2026NTM, Inc., a woman-owned precision job shop based in Fridley, MN celebrated its 50th anniversary Oct. 15. Employees, friends, vendors and customers gathered at NTM headquarters to celebrate the milestone and the relationships that have helped the company grow.
What started as a small parts shop has evolved into a precision manufacturing business focused on helping manufacturers succeed. That entrepreneurial spirit led to the development of NTM’s Stubby boring bars, which feature the company’s patented brazing technology.
Today, second-generation President and co-owner Barb Dorumsgaard continues to guide NTM’ investment in equipment, technology and its team.
“We need to keep looking toward the future of manufacturing while respecting where we came from. Investing in our equipment and our people helps us build on that foundation and continue meeting our customers’ needs,” Dorumsgaard said.
Dorumsgaard’s connection to NTM began as a teenager, answering phones and helping in the office. She later joined the company in shipping and receiving, where her responsibilities included operating a forklift and manually preparing packing slips on a typewriter.
Since then, she has seen handwritten ledgers and paper quoting files give way to cloud-based records, while CNC tool and cutter grinders now perform much of the work once completed on manual machines.
Today, NTM's products and services include Stubby carbide boring bars, Ultra-Precision Magnetic V-blocks, custom carbide tooling, machining, and tool grinding and sharpening.
As NTM looks toward its next chapter, its focus remains on providing quality tooling and practical solutions for manufacturers in Minnesota and across the continental U.S. through its distribution partners, the company reported.
