Advanced Grinding and Automation Technologies

GrindSmart 660XW tool/peel grinding machine

Peel grinding operation for blank preparation in the same chucking as tool grinding

The SmartMoma handling system consists of an AGV and a 6-axis robotic arm that integrates specific gripping systems for complex handling.

The Kawada humanoid robot autonomously performs tasks such as cassette loading, pre-grinding or post-grinding tool inspection, laser marking, placing finished products into packaging tubes and affixing labels to the tubes.

Strausak 5-axis CNC tool grinding machine model ONE

Rollomatic and Strausak, members of the Rollomatic Group, will feature several new products at IMTS.

GrindSmart 660XW

Rollomatic will introduce the hybrid model GrindSmart 660XW for combination grinding of tool geometries as well as peel grinding for neck, plunge grinding or other pre-fluting or post-fluting operations.

The new GrindSmart 660XW is a 6-axis tool and peel grinding machine. It allows the user to utilize cost-effective and advanced lean manufacturing principles. The machine includes a 6-position wheel changer and linear motors on all axes.

Features include:

  • Workhead: The machine features a traveling high-speed workhead. Peel grinding for blank preparation and neck grinding are included in the same chucking. RPM is up to 3,000.
  • Peel grinding: Blank preparation for common-shank rotary cutting tools, neck grinding for long-reach mold & die endmills and plunge grinding operations can be performed.
  • Steady rest: This machine includes an innovative steady rest system designed for grinding endmills as well as for drill point grinding.
  • Spindle motor: The grinding spindle is synchronous and is rated 20 HP.
  • Thermal stability and Cpk process capability index: The thermal stability is enhanced due to its 6-axis design and double-skin coolant enclosure. Field tests have demonstrated a high Cpk process capability.
  • Grinding range: From micro-size range to 1/2" (12.7 mm).

SmartMoma AGV with Mobile Robot and Nextage Humanoid Robot

Rollomatic has announced an Omron automatically guided vehicle with a robotic handling system and a Kawada humanoid industrial robot.

The Omron mobile robot allows the automatic transportation of tool cassettes between grinding machines and eventual delivery to post-grinding stations, such as measuring, laser marking, cleaning, packaging, labeling and more.

The Kawada humanoid robot autonomously performs tasks such as cassette loading, pre-grinding or post-grinding tool inspection, laser marking, placing finished products into packaging tubes and affixing labels to the tubes.

Both the SmartMoma and the Nextage robots will be shown in working action during IMTS 2022. The SmartMoma will transport full and empty cassettes between the grinding machines and the post-grinding station. The Nextage humanoid robot will perform tasks such as tubing and labeling.

Features of the SmartMoma Rollomatic Mobile Handling Solution by Omron:

  • The SmartMoma handling system consists of an automatically guided vehicle (AGV) and intelligent 6-axis robotic arm that integrates specific gripping systems for complex handling.
  • This mobile robot is capable of self-maneuvering autonomously in a production workshop.
  • Designed to bring higher autonomy to production machines, it enables loading and unloading of parts without human intervention.
  • The automation of parts handling between different production operations, such as measuring, marking or packaging, can be accomplished.
  • The SmartMoma mobile handling robot increases the autonomy of production machines while allowing operators to concentrate on tasks requiring more human skills with greater added value.

Features of the NEXTAGE Humanoid Industrial Robot Solutions by Kawada:

  • This is a new type of industrial robot which, given its frame and size, can perform tasks in locations that are difficult for traditional robots to access. It can be installed with ease without the need to redesign production lines.
  • This efficient humanoid robot can be placed where a person usually operates and use its head and two arms, equipped with cameras, to take over any tedious, dangerous or repetitive tasks, allowing workers to focus on areas that require creativity and so generate greater added value.
  • Users can control and teach NEXTAGE what to do with a visual and user-friendly interface. It can be teamed up with conventional industrial robots or any other specialized equipment and can be considered a true working partner.
  • A stand-alone cassette loading station is available utilizing the Kawada humanoid robot. This is a ready-to-go station that loads cutting tool blanks into Rollomatic cassettes from two different types of feeders: V-type feeder magazine and vibratory bowl feeder.

Tool Grinding Machine Model ONE

Strausak will feature the new model ONE 5-axis flexible tool and cutter grinding machine with Numroto tool design software for the grinding of rotary and stationary cutting tools in small and large batch production, for custom cutting tools as well as for resharpening.

Features include:

  • Scalable: This model has been designed so that any options can be upgraded and retrofitted at any time during the life of the machine.
  • Wheel changer: A 4-station wheel changer is integrated into the machine as standard. This wheel changer can be upgraded at any time to an 8-position or 12-position system. It is easily accessible from the outside of the machine.
  • Staubli robot: This optional robot can be pre-installed or retrofitted to the machine for parts handling, just like any other option. It is a 6-axis high-speed industrial robot that will allow extended unattended production as well as loading extra-long blanks or parts that are inherently difficult to load and unload. Rollomatic cassettes can be used in conjunction with this robot.
  • Pick & place loader: As a cost-conscious solution, this machine can be equipped with a pick & place loader that accepts the same cassettes as the range of Rollomatic machines.
  • Thermal stability and Cpk process capability index: "The thermal stability is high due to an innovative machine design and a rigid 5-axis configuration. Field tests have demonstrated an unusually high Cpk process capability. This is of particular importance when grinding short-run custom tooling where accuracy and first-tool-good are critical," said a spokesperson.
  • Linear motors: Linear motion technology is included in this machine for enhanced surface finishes on radius and other primary reliefs as well as flute finish. Linear motors also reduce the footprint of the machine.
  • Synchronous grinding spindle: The efficient synchronous spindle, running at max. 40% power draw or less, does not release any heat into the machine or into the grinding process. This helps with a consistent grinding process and thermal stability.
  • High-frequency spindle and wheel changer: As an option, this machine can be retrofitted with a high-speed grinding spindle together with a 3-position wheel changer. This option is suited for pocket grinding for brazed carbide, PCD or any other ultra-hard materials. Other applications could be short flutes, ID grinding or any other feature with tight radiuses.
  • Numroto software: This software platform offers the user high-performance tool design and intuitive programming for an unlimited range of applications for production, custom tooling and for resharpening.
  • Footprint: This machine offers a small footprint with a 32 mm (1-1/4") capacity while providing rigidity and power for production grinding.
