Sapphire Debris Shields Reduce Deterioration of Beam Quality



A line of laser debris shields for lasers from 4 kW up that can withstand steel splatter, flash and debris better than fused silica is available from Laser Research Optics.

"Laser Research Sapphire Debris Shields feature Mohs 9 hardness, which is second only to diamond, and can withstand steel splatter, flash and debris to reduce focus shift and the deterioration of beam quality," said a company spokesperson. Available in 0.5" and 2.0" sizes, they have lower bulk absorption with about 30x higher thermal conductivity than fused silica protection glasses, according to the company.

Extending service life and the required number of lens changes, Laser Research Sapphire Debris Shields have A/R coatings on both sides to provide transmission of > 99.5% @ 1.06 microns with > 80% @ 650-670 nm. These laser debris shields have a 10-5 scratch-dig finish and 1/4 wave transmitted wavefront.
