To meet the demand for machinists and programmers required by local manufacturers and job shops in the Northern Illinois region, Rock Valley College (RVC) has expanded its CNC training program with the opening of a new 75,000 sq. ft. Advanced Technology Center (ATC) located in Belvidere, IL.
The new facility includes 10 new Akira-Seiki CNC vertical machining centers (VMCs) and six new Smart Machine Tool CNC lathes sold and supported locally by Machinery Source, LLC.
"It was important to the local community of manufacturers and job shops that RVC-ATC purchased machines with FANUC controls. Students gain valuable hands-on training with control platforms used in many companies in Illinois and throughout America. This provides RVC graduates with advanced skill sets and affords them greater career opportunities," said a spokesperson.
RVC offers a basic eight-week CNC training program and 32-week advanced CNC training program that is based on the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certified skills training.
The NIMS CNC Mill and Lathe Operations certifications cover the following key skill areas:
- CNC mill, lathe and grinder set-up and operation
- Tool identification, set-up, use and maintenance
- Machining processes
- Statistical process control
- Quality and cycle time optimization
- CNC program operation
- Fixture set-up and operation
- CNC troubleshooting and maintenance for operators
- Precision measurement and gauging
- Print reading
- Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
