Precision Aerospace Acquires Decatur Machine Services

Precision Aerospace Holdings recently added Decatur Machine Services to its family of companies, which also includes Applegate EDM and Icon Machine Company, and is looking to add more companies soon. Precision has been making big investments in new technology by modernizing equipment, adding automation, purchasing new machines and hiring additional employees to help unlock the potential of these already high-performing businesses.

Precision Aerospace Holdings, a Dallas, TX-based portfolio company specializing in manufacturing for the aerospace and defense markets, is owned by private equity investors CIC Partners and Juniper Capital Management with industry veteran Pete Stegmaier as CEO.

"The key to taking this business to the next level is continued investment in people as well as new technologies," said Stegmaier. "We build on the legacy of knowledge and quality that already exists, replace under-utilized assets and add modernized machines to improve efficiency while at the same time adding capacity."

Applegate EDM, for example, recently added a new AgieCharmilles 600 Sinker machine to its lineup and now has 31 EDM machines that can handle geometry for products as complex as rocket engine turbo pumps. New machines give Applegate the ability to respond to rapid increases in customer needs for difficult shapes and the backup capability to ensure on time delivery for critical long-run production parts. Applegate is looking to add additional machines in Q1 of 2024 as customer demand increases. It runs out of a 30,000-sq.-ft. facility in Dallas.

Icon Machine Company continues to produce high precision parts for imaging and targeting systems on military platforms and is looking to invest in additional robotic capability to support increased volume. "The automation will add capacity without having to make a lot of other changes on the production line," said Bryan Grabosky, co-founding partner of Juniper.

Decatur Machine services has also recently added new machines with the purchase of a YCM JC10 and a Eurotech B620 SLY Elite. Decatur specializes in hard metal and tight tolerance machining for the defense industry. It produces complex, multifaceted parts, tooling and prototypes utilizing expert 3-, 4- and 5-axis machine tools and has received multiple customer awards for quality and on time delivery excellence. Precision was able to quickly make investments at Decatur to take advantage of opportunities provided by customers to accelerate deliveries.
