5-Axis Machining Centers for Aerospace Manufacturing

Hermle's C series machines extend from the compact C 20 for 5-axis machining of small parts to the C 60 mega-machining center capable of machining up to 2,500 kg applications.

"Seven basic designs comprising the series - including the new C 400 - and all share features such as patented modified gantry design, rugged base construction, high dynamics in the machining process, multiple options in terms of spindle speeds, tool magazine capacity, work table configurations and automation capability," said a company spokesperson.

"Because many of our demonstrations at trade shows and elsewhere have involved turbine blades and impeller type parts, it is natural for people to associate us with aircraft engine components," said Robert Komljenovic, President of Hermle Machine Company, the American headquarters of Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG of Gosheim, Germany. "Although that has always been a significant aspect of our business, our machines are involved in multiple less visible - but equally important - applications. One of the most challenging involved a landing gear component that required hard machining as well as grinding, and at the same time reduced cycle times. Smaller sized applications have included components related to medical electronics and the communications industries."

Although most Hermle aerospace applications involve current or even prototype parts, the company has made contributions in the area of refurbishment. "As an example, a repair facility at a major airline was struggling with the refurbishment of turbine compressor blades," said the spokesperson. "Measuring from 4 to 6 inches in length, the leading edge of the blade - where the heavy wear occurred - had to be built up with metal and then hand polished. Utilizing Hermle precision, coupled with a custom-designed software, a cycle time savings of 75% was achieved - with virtually no scrap."
