The Hurco DCX32, a 3-meter VMC, has become increasingly popular with shops who have aerospace work, according to a Hurco spokesperson. Aerospace contractor TGM said the DCX32's work envelope of 3.2 meters by 2.2 meters by 920 millimeters (36") has given them the opportunity to pitch for new business. They can now machine larger airframe components or fixture multiple parts for more efficient production.
With XYZ travels of 126" x 82.7" x 36.2", the DCX32 has a double-column, bridge-type construction that allows for the large Y-axis travel without the loss of rigidity, according to the company. "The dual-wound spindle mounted in a vertical ram gives ample cutting power and torque for machining titanium without requiring a gearbox, which eliminates additional assembly and maintenance," said a Hurco spokesperson. "Additionally, the box-in-box spindle design reduces deflection with heavy cuts. The 40-station, swing-arm tool changer keeps the carousel clear of swarf and maximizes the work envelope."
TGM uses the DCX32 to machine wing and fuselage parts, such as longerons, for BAE Systems' Eurofighter Typhoon; parts for Airbus in both titanium and aluminum; and backswept wing tips for the Boeing 737-600. Steve Holmes, a director at TGM, said the company continues to invest in Hurco machining centers due in large part to the integrated control that runs the latest WinMax Windows-based software. The control has a 40GB hard drive with 2GB RAM and high-speed contouring capability. According to Holmes, approximately 40% of the programs, even complex 2D jobs, are written quickly and easily on the shop floor using the control's conversational programming. The timesavings allow TGM to respond promptly to urgent jobs, particularly AOG (Aircraft On Ground) requests. The remaining 60% of programs are prepared off-line using their CAM system. "Whether it is a digital file or a drawing of an older component that is received from the customer, a 3D IGES file or a 2D DXF file can be prepared quickly and downloaded directly to the control on any of the Hurco machines for immediate use," said Holmes.
