TeraDiode Announces Purchase and Supply Agreement with Panasonic Welding Systems

TeraDiode has announced the signing of a purchase and supply agreement with Panasonic Welding Systems (PWS) (Osaka, Japan). Under the multiyear agreement TeraDiode will supply PWS 4kW high brightness TeraBlade laser engines. The TeraBlade engine enables PWS's robotic welding and cutting systems and will be marketed as "Powered by TeraDiode" under the Panasonic brand. The agreement grants PWS exclusive marketing rights for remote welding applications in much of Asia.

"Direct diode lasers are leapfrogging incumbent fiber and disk lasers in affordability, reliability and efficiency, due to well established economy of scale of diode laser bar technology and TeraDiode's scalable wavelength beam combination technology. The TeraBlade platform is a 4kW product delivered with a 100 micron output fiber, beam-parameter-product (BPP) of 3.8mm-mrad and a wall plug efficiency of 40%. The TeraDiode laser has been incorporated in PWS's remote welding system called 'LAPRISS' which has been exhibited in tradeshows in Japan, China and Germany," said a company spokesperson.

According to the company, the TeraBlade 2kW laser cuts 19 mm steel at 0.65 meters per minute at a quality comparable to CO2 lasers. Due to low cost of production and high efficiency, this laser is aimed at the materials processing industry.

"The signing of this purchase and supply agreement is evidence that the age of high brightness direct diode lasers has officially begun. PWS has been a great partner to work with to bring our first products to the market. We look forward to announcing new customers who are in the process of testing our lasers for performance and reliability and see our diode-only approach as a natural way to cost reduce their systems and broaden their markets," said Dr. Parviz Tayebati, CEO of TeraDiode.
