Hole-Drilling EDM with Advanced Breakthrough Detection

GF Machining Solutions' DRILL 300B employs electrodes ranging from 0.012" to 0.120" in diameter and several advanced technologies to precisely machine various sized holes in tough materials.

GF Machining Solutions' DRILL 300B hole-drilling EDM with advanced breakthrough detection is designed to bring high levels of flexibility to mass production environments. By employing electrodes ranging from 0.012" to 0.120" in diameter and incorporating several advanced technologies, the company reported that the DRILL 300B precisely machines various size holes in tough materials, including Inconel, titanium, steel and carbide.

"Equipped with GF Machining Solutions' latest digital generator and CNC, compact fixed table mechanics and a high degree of automation, the DRILL 300B delivers highly efficient pulses that significantly increase drilling speeds and productivity," said a company spokesperson. "The generator also applies process control strategies that include first spark detection, electrode wear compensation, cylindricity control and advanced breakthrough detection. The function reduces the breakthrough time by monitoring the process in real time and adapting the technology automatically to exit conditions."

The DRILL 300B has a Z-axis travel of 17.72" to maximize autonomy and a +/- 45° tilting head to drill angled holes. Machine axis movement speeds reach a maximum of 157 IPM. Furthermore, its 6-axis configuration makes it possible to drill round and shaped cooling holes in aerospace blades and vanes, while its indexing table also allows for the production of holes in a circular pattern.

Various levels of automation accompany the DRILL 300B. The machine automatically controls its dielectric water temperature and conductivity, and the filtration system is in the standard configuration for stable machining. Additionally, an automatic electrode guide changer and an external handling device can assist in configuring the DRILL 300B.

Designed for ease of use, the DRILL 300B features remote control for all set-up cycles, axis movements during alignments and tool changer control when preparing electrodes/guides. Programming is simplified for single holes, multi-pieces and multi-holes with various technologies and electrodes/guides.

The DRILL 300B features a footprint of 55.12" wide (74.8" with tilting head) x 91.34" deep x 85.83" high, compact fixed table design and integrated electrode and dielectric unit.

"GF Machining Solutions' UPTIME+ service and support program further leverages the competitive advantages of its advanced product portfolio through applications expertise, comprehensive training, technical assistance, preventive maintenance, warranty coverage as well as parts and consumables," said the spokesperson.
