Customized Horizontal Boring Mill

Model WFT 13 is a standard, universal 5" horizontal boring mill from Fermat. "It features a universal design, robust casting, powerful headstock, enhanced fit and finish along with user friendly operation," said a company spokesperson.

Fermat offers a range of optional accessories such as chip conveyor, coolant through the spindle, automatic tool changer and a wide range of manual and automatic heads or automatic pallet options. It is customizable to customer requirements.

The WFT 13 can be equipped with up to a 50 ton table in different table top sizes or a robotic tool changer, which is designed to exchange 105 tools minimum (based on design) into the working spindle of Fermat's horizontal boring mills. "Another special feature is a new design on pallet exchange systems," said the spokesperson. "Fermat's 'Speed Lock' system is fast, effective and a very economical solution for customers with high volume production pieces without the cost and complexity of full pallet shuttle systems. It is a locating and locking system to accurately move multiple work fixtures with parts on to the working table with the shop's crane. This system limits the amount of time between set-ups, which increases efficiency and productivity."

Two new Fermat smart solutions were recently delivered: turning table (lathe style) for table type machine and line boring accessory.

Turning on Table Type Horizontal Boring Mill

This was designed for customers who require universal multifunctioning machines, especially those with production requirements for O.D. turning and who do not have a VTL or want to eliminate outsourcing this operation.

The Fermat turning table gives them the possibility to turn a part up to 15 tons, as well as mill, drill and bore while it is table clamped or operating as a servo axis.

Features include:

  • Diameter of table: Ø1,800 mm
  • Maximum weight: 15,000 kg
  • Table travel X: 2,500 mm
  • Travel speed of X-axis: 8,000 mm/min
  • Revolutions on table: 0 - 100 rev/min.

Line Boring

Petra Mrkvov, Sales manager for the U.S., said, "During the last year, we have received a lot of requests for line boring applications. Our opinion was that it is an old design solution and that the rigidity and precision of our machine does not require this customization. But it was our customers who persuaded us that this solution is the best for their application, programmers and operators.

"Fermat used the fixed column with moving saddle model horizontal boring mill, WFC 13, and equipped it with a backrest, which allows precision set-up and precise machining - thus line boring ensures that the holes are of the same diameter and that their centerlines are parallel and concentric."
