Crash Damage Protection, Wireless Accelerometer

GTI Spindle Technology offers two new systems that provide crash damage control to any spindle, and GTI Predictive Technology has announced the availability of new wireless accelerometers that work in conjunction with its iPad Vibration Analyzer.

Crash Damage Protection

The crash damage control systems work automatically once set up. According to the company, set-up is included in the price with every system to help ensure proper functionality. Each system detects when a crash has occurred and within a millisecond the system will remove power from the machine.

"The systems are designed to work without access to the machine's PLC, which provides easy retrofitting access to a variety of machines," said a company spokesperson. "Even though crashes will still happen, these systems will prevent excessive damage that leads to long and expensive repair jobs."

Highlights include:

  • Immediate crash detection and machine shutdown
  • Programmed by experts to help insure system is set up properly
  • Universal support; access to the PLC not required
  • Choose between GTI Force and GTI Detect to fit any budget
  • In most cases, sensor is reusable to provide long-term protection
  • Less damage means faster repairs and less expensive repairs
  • Keeps an automatic record of the last 99 crashes
  • Reduced property insurance cost in many cases.

GTI offers these systems either standalone or as an add-on to machines from spindles being repaired by GTI.

"The first system, GTI Force, is a 5-axis impact force sensor," said the spokesperson. "The impact force sensors are more accurate and quick to respond than anything else in the market. The second system, GTI Detect, utilizes a 3-axis accelerometer and provides an alternative solution for companies on a tighter budget."

Wireless Accelerometer

GTI engineered its new wireless accelerometers for versatility. They can be powered either through an easily swappable battery or through the USB port. This design allows for users to permanently mount these accelerometers, or the battery users can simply use this wireless version as a more convenient and safer option of the wired version. The wireless accelerometer also includes a second input port that accepts either a tachometer or a second accelerometer. "We felt it was important that wireless users had this expansion port to allow for balancing and other applications that required a second channel of input," said the spokesperson.

A sturdy design was another important design decision when creating this product. All of the ports on the accelerometer are waterproof, enabling it to be permanently mounted outside. The construction of the accelerometer also provides plenty of drop protection.

"Over the years, GTI has developed a platform of different apps that work in conjunction with GTI's iPad-enabled accelerometers and tachometers," said the spokesperson. "GTI ensured during the development of this product that out of the box it would work with all of those existing apps. Going forward, the wireless accelerometer will be able to do things never possible with the wired version. A future update will enable users to name their accelerometers and quickly switch between different accelerometers. GTI wants to make vibration route data collection as simple and easy as possible, and this wireless accelerometer is another step to make it even easier."

GTI's wireless iPad accelerometer is available in a vibration analysis package, or for current customers as a stand-alone option.
