Precision Cutting Utilizing Micro Waterjet Technology

The microwaterjet machine used by Micro Waterjet was specifically designed to machine two-dimensional, high precision and micro parts with a substantially smaller kerf width (0.08 mm for pure water cutting; 0.2 mm for abrasive cutting) compared to traditional waterjet machines (0.8 mm) that are primarily used to cut or rough large shapes and/or thicker materials. In addition, the microwaterjet utilizes smaller nozzles and a finer garnet than conventional machines, according to the company.

"The benefits of precision waterjet cutting are numerous. No tooling costs, ability to cut conductive and non-conductive exotic materials, rapid prototyping on the thinnest materials and adding features to existing parts or blanks," said a company spokesperson.

Micro Waterjet's equipment is configured similarly to a wire EDM, in that there is a precision ground workholding frame where either the material or a fixture can be secured. Existing parts or blanks can be set up quickly and accurately, such as for prototyping and short to medium run production.

Micro Waterjet, LLC was formed through a joint venture between Waterjet AG and Max Daetwyler Corporation to bring micro manufacturing services for advanced abrasive waterjet technologies to North America. They serve a range of markets including aerospace, automotive, electrical/electronic, machine shops, jewelry, medical, motorsports, research labs and other specialty applications.
