U-Cell Workstation Improves Productivity, Uses Less Space

An industrial machine manufacturer was using standard workbenches in a dedicated segment of its assembly operations. Some materials and supplies were located in areas not within easy reach, which did not initially pose a problem. However, as business grew, the volume, density and variety of products manufactured increased requiring associates to spend extra time hunting for supplies and tools.

Creform Corporation was chosen to provide a solution to this problem by designing and building custom "U-cells" in place of the standard workbenches. These right-sized workstations were built using the flexible Creform system of plastic coated steel pipe and metal joints, which allows them to be easily altered if required. All tools and supplies are now within arm's reach of the sit-down work cells. Standard hardware units integrated into the work cells store small parts, while reels with wire and heat shrink are placed above and below the work surfaces. Pegboard keeps tools easily identifiable and within reach.

According to the company, the ergonomic principles employed for the entire operation minimize reach distances and times, decreasing worker fatigue, resulting in a 30% productivity improvement and requiring 20% less space. The wiring shop supervisor of the manufacturer stated, "We are very pleased with the improvements we have made with the Creform U-cells. This type of project supports our lean manufacturing initiatives. The time we spent planning the layout of the cells will pay dividends for many years. When production volumes are high the U-cells support extra personnel but when requirements are lowered they allow operators to multi-task."

The Creform system is used to create an array of material handling and efficiency enhancing devices, including push, special purpose and trailer carts, flow racks, roller conveyors, workstations, and AGV/AGCs. The Creform system is utilized in continuous improvement and lean manufacturing programs, and the company partners with customers in developing and implementing these programs.
