Gundrills Carry SUMOCHAM Drilling Heads

ISCAR's gundrill, SUMOGUN, is available with SUMOCHAM indexable inserts, featuring two cutting edges (fully effective). According to the company, this makes it much more productive than traditional brazed tip gundrills.

"Gundrills, as their name implies, were originally developed for manufacturing weapons," said a company spokesperson. "Today they are used extensively in the metalcutting industries, including aerospace, automotive, dies and molds, etc. Building on the successful SUMOCHAM line, ISCAR's 'no set-up time' concept has been implemented on its gundrills."

ISCAR is expanding the drill length options above 12xD depth to diameter ratio in a diameter range of 10 to 25.9 mm, and a maximum total length can be 1,000 mm. The new gundrills can be used on standard horizontal milling centers, lathes, multitask machines and gundrill machines.

SUMOGUN enables replacement of the drilling head inside the machine - there is no need to remove the drill for head indexing. A polyamide plastic key is available for clamping and removing the SUMOGUN head. The SUMOGUN features two straight flutes carrying the standard SUMOCHAM drilling heads. The SUMOCHAM drilling heads are fully effective, which enables drilling at higher table feed rates when compared to most other gundrills available in the market, according to the company. The SUMOGUN provides the end user the ability to clamp different head geometries according to the material and application.

The drill features a pocket that can undergo at least 25 head replacements. The connection between the pocket and tube is done by a new welding process for high-torque resistance.

The company reported the following features:

  • Two to five times higher table feed than standard brazed gundrills
  • Coated carbide grades
  • Excellent straightness and concentricity
  • Maintains high hole precision and center alignment
  • Surface roughness of 0.4-2.0 Ra is easily obtained
  • All drill bodies feature straight coolant holes.
