Milling Solutions for Range of Applications

Manufacturers of standard components can maximize their production times with the new FZH400

"Every industry, whether it is automotive engineering, aircraft construction or modelmaking, has unique demands when it comes to milling," said a company spokesperson. "F. Zimmermann GmbH is familiar with these sectors and will be presenting its comprehensive know-how at IMTS 2016." With the help of machine models it will be displaying solutions for a range of applications.

An example is the M3 ABC 3-axis milling head, which Zimmermann developed in order to accelerate the production of aluminum components for the aircraft industry. The swivel angles of the rotation axes are designed to permit 6-axis simultaneous machining of workpieces with a constant advance rate. The swiveling movements are small and the surface quality is good. The M3 ABC is integrated in the FZ100 portal milling machine, for example, where it boosts productivity in the machining of aluminum, composites and modelmaking materials. "Subsequent deburring and polishing are unnecessary, which means that users can fabricate standard components up to 50% faster than with conventional 2-axis fork-type heads in 5-axis simultaneous operation," said the spokesperson.

F. Zimmermann has developed a new machine, the FZ40 compact, suitable for heavy-duty cutting like toolmaking. Its primary applications are efficient machining of steel, cast iron and titanium. The rigid monoblock structure means that it can be set up easily and rapidly. It is based on the FZ33 compact and offers the same advantages. The machine features the new VH60 2-axis milling head with an output of 63 kW and a torque of 300 Nm. It is available with the HSK-A100 toolholder.

Zimmermann will also be presenting its first 5-axis horizontal machining center, the FZH400. The new model range is useful for efficient machining of standard components for the aircraft industry. The core technology of the FZH400 is a robust, water-cooled traveling column. Its rigidity increases as the material is penetrated. This helps to ensures a constant geometry along the Z-axis as well as increased rigidity in sensitive areas of the workpiece. The user can thus work quickly and obtain enhanced surfaces. Already in the standard version, the machining center features a pallet handling system with an area for setting up pallets during machine time. The handling system, also newly designed, enables reliable transport of pallets without sagging and is suitable for longer pallet lengths. Zimmermann supplies this production solution in a turn-key state.
