Aerospace and defense manufacturing is often characterized by highly complex, multi-sided components that must be produced quickly and accurately. "But machining complicated parts fast - while meeting stringent engineering specifications and cost requirements - can be a challenge," said a Haas Automation, Inc. spokesperson. "Reaching all sides of a part often requires multiple set-ups that are time consuming, and can negatively affect precision.
"The UMC-750 machining center from Haas is designed to be a cost-effective solution for reducing set-ups and increasing accuracy for multi-sided and complex parts, using 5-sided (3+2) and simultaneous 5-axis machining."
The UMC-750 is a versatile 5-axis 40-taper vertical machining center (VMC) with 30" x 20" x 20" travels and an integrated dual-axis trunnion table. The base machine is equipped with an 8,100 RPM inline direct-drive spindle (12,000 RPM optional), and comes standard with a 40+1 tool side-mount tool changer.
The UMC-750's dual-axis trunnion table can position parts to nearly any angle for 5-sided (3+2) machining, or provide full simultaneous 5-axis motion for contouring and complex machining. The trunnion provides +110° and -35° of tilt and 360° of rotation for improved tool clearance and large part capacity, and the 630 x 500 mm table features standard T-slots and a precision pilot bore for fixturing versatility. To simplify job set-up, the UMC-750 features Dynamic Work Offsets and Tool Center Point Control, and comes standard with Haas Automation's Wireless Intuitive Probing System.
The machine's 8,100 RPM inline direct-drive spindle is powered by a 30 HP vector drive system. The Haas inline system couples the spindle directly to the motor to reduce heat, increase power transmission and provide enhanced surface finishes. For shops wanting higher spindle speeds, an optional 12,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle is available. Both spindles yield 90 ft-lbs. of cutting torque.
A selection of high-productivity options is available for the UMC-750, including a belt-type chip conveyor, high-pressure through-spindle coolant systems, high-speed machining control software, expanded program memory and more.
