Doosan Opens Large Machine Tool Plant in Korea

Doosan Machine Tools recently celebrated the completion of its new factory specializing in the production of large-sized CNC machine tools in Seongju-dong, Seongsan-gu, Changwon City, making it the third factory for Doosan Machine Tools in Changwon City, South Korea.

Machines to be produced in the new plant include horizontal boring mills, bridge mills, double column machining centers, ram type vertical turning centers, Puma 600/700/800 XL turning centers and vertical machining centers with X-axis travels of over two meters.

Construction began in 2012, with the factory situated on a total area of 110,607 m2. The interior floor space area of the current Phase I production facility is 18,355 m2, all of which is used for machine assembly.

Doosan plans to expand the current production capacity of large-sized CNC machine tools from 1,000 units per year to around 3,600 units per year through its implementation of Phase II, given the bright prospects for the continuous worldwide growth in the energy, construction and aerospace industries, the major market sectors for large-sized machine tools.

"Assembly of large-size machine tools requires unique infrastructure, which is why the new Doosan plant is custom designed for the manufacture of large machine tools, and is also equipped with production equipment and facilities that guarantee precision processing," said a company spokesperson. "As such, productivity and efficiency have been greatly improved at the new factory.

"Specifically, the plant is designed to meet the needs of both super micron precision and high productivity in the production of large capacity machine tools. Close attention has been given to the factory foundations to provide sufficient load capacity for the assembly of large size machines. To further ensure the precision of production equipment, temperatures and humidity are strictly controlled in the factory. To maximize productivity, the factory has been equipped with automatic operating systems for lights-out or 24-hour operations."

"Through the dedication of a new factory specializing in the production of large machine tools, the company is now able to reduce production time and improve quality in the area of large machine tools," said Jaeyoon Lee, the head of the Machine Tools BG. "Doosan Machine Tools will be able to deliver world class large machine tools in some of the fastest growing market sectors."
