CNC Hardware Designed for Aerospace Part Manufacturing

Siemens presents new, more powerful CPUs, along with new 15- and 19-inch "Blackline" touch panels in widescreen format for the Sinumerik 840D sl CNC.

During AERODEF 2016, Siemens presented new and more powerful CPUs, along with "Blackline" touch panels in widescreen format for its Sinumerik 840D sl CNC. Featuring new 7x0.3B PN processors, these Profinet-compatible NCUs are up to 15 percent more powerful than previous versions. "Machine tool users will benefit from shorter program run-times, faster simulation and fast operation of the machine," said a company spokesperson. "The new technology, exemplified by the 720.3B PN and 730.3B PN NCUs, also consumes up to 50 percent less power which, in turn, causes the processors to generate less heat."

Basic configurations of the 7x0.3B PN-CPUs for the Sinumerik 840D sl already have 10 MB of buffered user memory as standard for part programs and 2 GB of working memory (DRAM). Part program memory can be expanded up to 22 MB, depending upon the particular processor model. In most cases, automatic driver adaptation enables the new NCUs to be integrated into existing machines and applications without modifying the software. "The long-term availability of the new NCU processor technology offers a secure future for newly developed machines - both for further development and on account of the long-term availability of spare part components," said the spokesperson.

New 15-inch and 19-inch "Blackline" panels are widescreen format touch panels. "Mainly characterized by exceptional legibility, simple operation and long service life, the Blackline displays are based upon a capacitive sensor system that supports touch operation even when gloves are worn. Blackline panels are designed for IP66 degree of protection and are especially rugged. For example, the 15-inch panel is approved for vibration accelerations up to 2 g. Both have an integrated thin client unit (TCU) and are connected to the Sinumerik CNC via Ethernet," said the spokesperson.
