North Idaho College Upgrades Engine Lathes

North Idaho College has announced the addition of Ganesh GT-1640 geared head engine lathes, with support from local dealer King Machine (Meridian, ID). The GT-1640s will be used for training students in the college's Machining and CNC Technology program.

According to Machine Technology Instructor Kurt Kimberling, Ganesh GT-1640 benefits include quality, longevity and ease of operation. "Other machine tools were considered to replace our manual lathes, but I found them to be too light in weight and there was difficulty in changing gears," he said. "Cost was also a factor, and Ganesh made this a non-issue. These machines do a great job. We anticipate them lasting a very long time."

"We machine 12L14, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, titanium, 4140 tool steel and more," continued Kimberling. "Students will perform simple O.D. turning, boring, threading (single point), and O.D. and I.D. tool post grinding on the Ganesh GT-1640."

The GT-1640 was ordered with 3-jaw, 4-jaw and collet chucks, ACU-RITE DRO, Aloris tool post and holders, live center and drill chuck for tailstock.

North Idaho College's Machining and CNC Technology program prepares students for entry-level employment in the machining and manufacturing industries. The curriculum features basic to advanced machining concepts involving various machine tools such as conventional lathes, mills, grinders and their computer numerical control (CNC) counterparts. Coursework also involves blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, shop math and statistical and mechanical measurements. The second year of the program places emphasis in CNC and CAD/CAM systems and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing in preparation for employment in computerized manufacturing processes.

The Machining and CNC Technology program utilizes a variety of manual and CNC machine tools, as well as an EDM, CMM, surface grinders and more. "Our goal is to train the next generation of machinists to fill the workforce void," said Kimberling. "We aim to provide the best quality instruction to help our students become successful in the industry."
