Vertical CNC Grinder Now Includes Polygon Capability

SHIGIYA (USA) LTD. has upgraded its GPV-10 vertical CNC grinders to include polygon capability. Engineered in response to customer demands, SHIGIYA's new GPV-10-20 vertical CNC grinder incorporates the advanced polygon grinding technology utilized in its GPES series.

The GPV-10-20 features a compact footprint to accommodate a range of production line layouts. Its main body is approximately 1 sq. m (10.76 sq. ft.), or about half the size of an existing SHIGIYA GAC-20 grinder. According to the company, a smaller size results in a machine that is less expensive than a horizontal version without sacrificing accuracy or advanced features.

"Including a workhead that is powered by a direct drive motor, the GPV-10-20 grinds small workpieces with greater precision and control than a belt-driven grinder," said a company spokesperson. "This direct drive motor has been upgraded from the original GPV-10 to facilitate polygon grinding. An innovative gate structure further ensures accuracy by counter measuring against vibration, thermal displacement and noise. A top beam securely connects the upper portion of the two columns. The rigidity of the GPV-10-20 allows extreme precision after a cold start and during post-process grinding."

Further contributing to GPV-10-20 accuracy is Shigiya's original non-concentric hydrodynamic bearing for the wheel spindle. Mounted on the wheel side of the wheelhead, this bearing maintains low processing heat by optimizing the bearing clearance and the wedge angle. Infeed is performed by the table moving toward the wheel.

Features that promote ease of use include a wide machine opening that allows for flexible automation of loading/unloading and easy maintenance and an electrical control panel hinged on the rear of the machine that swings open wide to provide working space for easy wheel change. The grinding wheel is not angled and does not require a wheel changer to be changed.

The GPV-10-20 includes the option to install the control panel on the left or the right side of the machine for easy automation in tight spaces.

Specifications for the GPV-10-20 include a swing over table of ø 100 mm (3.93"), a maximum workpiece height of 200 mm (7.87") and a weight capacity of 10 kg (22.05 lbs.).
