Developments in Milling Tools

The KOMET Group offers milling tools that include the Quatron hi.feed milling cutter, suited for the removal of large quantities of metal, and hi.aeQ face-milling cutter, which is designed for shoulder- and face-milling cast iron. Also available is KOMET JEL with a full variety of standard solid carbide milling tools available, along with PCD milling cutters.

The Quatron hi.feed milling cutter is designed for a variety of milling operations, including plunge milling. Plunge milling - ideal for cutting deep grooves and large cavities in applications that require large projection lengths or are subject to unstable conditions - requires a high performance roughing tool that can quickly remove large quantities of material. The Quatron hi.feed is designed with these needs in mind.

The Quatron hi.feed is designed for cost-effective milling. The indexable tool with four cutting edges per insert is designed to reduce production costs per cutter. The inserts are composed of tough substrates designed for use with steel, cast iron and stainless materials. The Quatron hi.feed is designed to provide a high volume of chip removal along with high feedrates.

KOMET's hi.aeQ face-milling cutter is designed for shoulder and face milling of cast iron workpieces, as well as for counter-boring and milling operations. The nickel-plated body of the hi.aeQ features tangentially positioned Q80 indexable inserts, which are fitted in an alternately standing/lying arrangement. "In addition to offering a high number of cutting edges relative to the tool diameter, this design affords the hi.aeQ high stability and low vibration," said a company spokesperson. "As such, customers benefit from a higher cutting efficiency and lower power consumption, along with quieter operation and reduced spindle loads. Each indexable insert has eight usable cutting edges, making this tool particularly cost effective."

The hi.aeQ is available in diameters ranging from 63 to 160 mm, with additional diameters set to be released soon, allowing for a range of uses. It is designed in accordance with DIN 8030. The inserts are available with a PVD TIALN or a CVD TICN, TIN aluminium oxide coating (with steel inserts coming soon), to meet the requirements of customers' specific operations. A coolant sleeve helps ensure that coolant is equally distributed to every cutting edge for increased tool life.

KOMET also offers a full range of JEL standard solid carbide milling cutters. This solid carbide milling line has tools to meet customers' milling needs in diameters from 3 to 25 mm, and for the milling of cast iron, steel, aluminum and non-ferrous metals. "The versatility comes in part from the many versions in which they are offered, including end milling cutters, roughing end mills, HPC milling cutters, spherical cutters, torus milling cutters, chamfer milling cutters and radius milling cutters," said a company spokesperson. "The highly engineered grade profiles and coating provide productivity, irrespective of the application. While KOMET has a comprehensive standard range available in stock, regrinding and recoating services are also available from the comprehensive network of local KOMET SERVICE Partners."

An addition to the JEL line of milling tools is the JEL PCD face milling cutter, which features a high number of teeth, allowing for high feeds, a long cutting depth and a long tool life, according to the company. "PCD milling cutters are flexible and easy to handle, and they can be used in a range of operations," said the spokesperson. "The JEL face milling cutter is also reliable, requiring no adjustment, due to its monoblock design, and it features an internal cooling supply, which flows to the cutting edge via a coolant screw." The JEL face milling cutter is available in two variants: Type 140 for Rz < 10 um and Type 150 for Rz
