Intelligent Deburring with Six-Axis Robot

FANUC America Corporation offers its M-20iB/35S 6-axis robot that uses iRVision to locate a casting on a pallet and places it into a clamp for deburring. The robot then uses Image-to-Path software to develop a deburring path, adapted from the ideal CAD model. Once the path is created, a robot-mounted FANUC FS-40iA force sensor is used to maintain a consistent force against the part as the robot moves the cutting tool along the path. After deburring and placing the casting back on the pallet, the robot uses the force sensor and a gauge to check deburring tool wear. When a worn tool is detected, the robot automatically exchanges the worn tool for a new one without operator assistance.

A recent cell demonstration highlighted the new robot's compact size and payload capabilities, ability to handle two different workpieces and automatic tool wear check and replacement for lights-out manufacturing. In addition, the system features Image-to-Path, which automatically generates edge deburring programs using ROBOGUIDE and iRVision. Designed as a deburring support tool, the Force Control Deburring Package allows manufacturers to easily adapt to casting variations in machined parts.

The M-20iB/35S has a 35 kg payload and a 1,445 mm reach and is the latest in the M-20iB series of 6-axis robots, including the M-20iB/25 with a reach of 1,853 mm and 25 kg payload and the M-20iB/25C clean room version.

It is designed to handle parts in a variety of applications such as material removal, machine load/unload, assembly and bin picking.

The new robot offers a rigid and compact design with a sealed structure (integrated utilities and motors), and a rear or bottom exit for cables. The entire robot is rated IP67, allowing it to withstand harsh environments.

Other key features and benefits include:

  • Internally routed utilities offering solenoid valves, camera cables, Ethernet, ASi cable, force and 3DL sensor cable and EE utility
  • Slim arm and compact footprint minimizes interference to peripheral devices in tight workspaces
  • Flexible floor, ceiling and angle mounting options
  • Rigid design and advanced servo technology enables smooth motion at high speeds
  • The latest R-30iB Plus controller features an intuitive iPendant with enhanced screen resolution and more processing capability compared to previous versions.
