Carlson Tool & Manufacturing, a production-focused company, wanted to add more capabilities to its tool and contract machining division. In order to add these capabilities and meet the growing demands of its customers, Carlson needed a partner that could provide multi-purpose machines that are efficient and flexible-with powerful and reliable technology to differentiate Carlson from competitors-and strong after-sales support to ensure a smooth transition and little down time. After research, price comparisons and a recommendation from a local area shop, Carlson Tool decided Toyoda was the answer.

Carlson Tool acquired its first Toyoda machine in 2011-a large FA1050S horizontal machining center (HMC). "Growing demand allowed us to expand the capabilities of our contract drilling and machining division," said a company spokesperson. After success with its first machine, Carlson continued to expand its fleet with a range of Toyodas to develop its work envelope and increase capacity across the board. "We started out with a focus on gundrilling and deep hole drilling, and over the years added additional capabilities in honing, turning and machining," said the spokesperson. "We are now a one-stop shop dedicated to providing turn-key components for all markets including defense, oil & gas, heavy equipment, aerospace, medical, automotive and many more."

Toyoda's large HMCs deliver high accuracy for heavy duty cutting; horizontal boring mills provide job flexibility; and five-face bridge mills offer increased capacity for large parts. Carlson Tool's fleet includes an FH1250SX HMC, FA1050S HMC, HB1620 horizontal boring mill, SB316YZM (3 m x 1.6 m) five-face bridge mill and two RB312 (3 m x 1.2 m) bridge mills.

The newest machine, the HB1620, has already delivered a 30% decrease in cycle times compared to its previous horizontal boring mill. Carlson Tool's milling division is now 100% Toyoda-with plans to replace machines in other divisions as needed.

"Toyoda has been an invaluable partner in growing our machining division. They really get to know your business to make sure you are getting exactly what you need to be successful," said Adam Jaeger, Lead of the CNC Division. Communication and support were big factors in Carlson's choice to move forward with Toyoda. "They have excellent service, little downtime and they always have parts in stock if you need them," Jaeger added.

Growing the machining business with Toyoda has increased Carlson Tool's work envelope and boosted its business by expanding its range of services. "We are 100% confident in our capacity to tackle large and difficult jobs. Our first Toyoda machine was purchased on high recommendation by another area machine shop. Now, I make recommendations. Toyoda makes a good product and stands behind it," said Jaeger.
