Advanced Automation for Metal Fabrication

KUKA Robotics recently featured live demonstrations of the company's KR IONTEC ultra 6-axis robot and KR CYBERTECH industrial robot paired with an Electrically-Actuated E Series magnetic gripping solution from Magswitch Technologies, which showcased compact, configurable automation and high performance for challenging fabricating applications.

KUKA's KR IONTEC ultra industrial robot, combined with Magswitch Technologies' Electrically-Actuated ELAY50X5 switchable permanent magnet, was used to assemble a 12' long steel truss for the construction industry. With the support of KUKA.RoboTeam software, the robots coordinated material handling of the truss, while two KR CYBERTECH robots simulated robotic arc welding of its components. Together, the demonstrations highlighted the precision, adaptability, and performance of KUKA robots when paired with innovative tooling solutions.

The demonstration also emphasized the benefits of Magswitch Technologies' Electrically-Actuated, pneumatic-free design, including fail-safe ON mode, Variable Field Output (VFO) for destacking, proper part-present sensing and high breakaway forces of up to 2,537 lbs. (1,151 kg). Combined with KUKA's motion control and intuitive programming, the display illustrated how manufacturers can simplify end-effector design, reduce downtime and expand application flexibility.

KUKA's IONTEC is a versatile 6-axis medium payload robot that can be floor, wall, ceiling, or angle mounted, and its optimized design is suited for compact cells with a small footprint.

"Featuring a best-in-class work envelope and equipped with waterproof and dustproof in-line wrist and protected motors, IONTEC is suitable for virtually any application," said a company spokesperson.

The KR CYBERTECH nano ARC Edition offers cost-effective welding that provides dynamic automation in price-sensitive markets, the company reported. The Edition robot is available in two reaches, from 1,440 mm to 2,010 mm, and features a hollow wrist with bearings on either side of the robot with a diameter of 46 mm and a repeatability of 0.04 mm. The robot offers high path accuracy and speed to workpieces for increased efficiency and less downtime.

KUKA.RoboTeam software enables multiple robots to work together on shared tasks with synchronized motion and real-time data exchange. Up to four robots can be networked to coordinate material handling, positioning, and welding processes with high efficiency. The software offers high path accuracy, intuitive configuration, and robust safety features, providing manufacturers with a scalable solution for flexible, multirobot production environments.
