2014 Manufacturing Technology Orders Up 5.2%

September U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $647.63 million according to AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the United States Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) program, was up 77.3% from August and up 61.4% when compared with the total of $401.18 million reported for September 2013. With a year-to-date total of $3,738.72 million, 2014 is up 5.2% compared with 2013.

These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTO program.

"We now have data to back up the anecdotal reports that IMTS was an exceptionally strong show. This is a great sign that manufacturers are eager to invest in equipment that will boost their productivity," said Douglas K. Woods, AMT President. "But, Washington's cooperation will be essential to continuing our momentum going forward. With the midterm elections just passed, Congress now must focus on passing tax extender legislation during the lame-duck session, and then taking on comprehensive tax reform once the new Congress convenes in 2015."

The USMT report, compiled by the trade association representing the production and distribution of manufacturing technology, provides regional and national U.S. orders data of domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment. Analysis of manufacturing technology orders provides a reliable leading economic indicator as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity.

U.S. manufacturing technology orders are also reported on a regional basis for six geographic breakdowns of the United States.

Northeast Region

Northeast Region manufacturing technology orders in September totaled $115.94 million, up 84.9% from August's $62.72 million and up 86.5% when compared with last September's $62.17 million. The $614.09 million year-to-date total was up 3.4% when compared with 2013 at the same time.

Southeast Region

At $356.43 million, the 2014 year-to-date total for Southeast Region manufacturing technology orders was 9.3% higher than the comparable figure for 2013.

North Central-East Region

September manufacturing technology orders in the North Central-East Region reached $133.90 million, up 46.6% from August's $91.32 million and up 27.1% when compared with the $105.35 million total for September 2013. The 2014 year-to-date total of $983.23 million was 7.2% more than the 2013 tally at the same time.

North Central-West Region

North Central-West Region manufacturing technology orders in September stood at $136.76 million, a rise of 101.3% from August's $67.95 million and up 85.2% when compared with the $73.85 million for September a year ago. The 2014 year-to-date total of $647.27 million was 1.4% less than the comparable figure for 2013.
