"Positrol's customers either produce parts with very tight tolerances or with high production runs. In these high production runs, changeover time becomes absolutely critical. If the cycle time for a part is only 30 seconds or so, it becomes difficult to justify the machine being down for 30 minutes to change over the top tooling. In this example, that would be 60 parts lost due to downtime," said Josh Pocock, Sales Engineer, Positrol, Inc.
To remedy this problem, Positrol offers a chuck change product that allows customers to changeover complete chucks in a matter of minutes. The company also can create a solution where one chuck can hold an entire family of parts by simply changing over the top tooling.
Positrol engineers created a design that would reduce changeover time for top tooling. In this design, customers can change jaws and workstops without the use of hand tools.
According to Positrol, the Jaw Change System has been tested in-house for rigidity and repeatability, and its longevity has been thoroughly tested as well. The jaws and workstops were changed continuously by a robot for a week without failure.
