30-Degree Automatic Head

The new Zayer 30° automatic head is a 2-axis CNC controlled head that can work in 5-axis machining, both positioning and continuous. The arrangement of the two axis allows machining in negative angles up to 30° with regards to the ram. The automatic head is usually paired with one of Zayer's CNC gantry type machining centers, typically a model called THERA. Available in the United States exclusively through Republic Lagun, these CNC gantry mills allow for enhanced volumetric accuracy and weight and have the ability to approach the part from a variety of angles. Zayer CNC gantry machining centers range from 2.5 meter production machines to 31 meter specialty machines.

"This head is an evolution of the Zayer 45° automatic head used with success by a considerable number of manufacturers around the world. Maintaining the features that worked well on the 45° head, improvements have been incorporated to meet new market demands," said a company spokesperson.

  • Working in continuous movement:
    • Allows machining with simultaneous movements for 5 axis machining of complex surfaces
    • Allows machining in positioning with rapid movements with the head unclamped in order to improve the machining times when drilling in different angles, etc.
  • Positioning in negative angles: Allows work in negative angles (towards the ram) with a maximum of 30°
  • Turning point of front head and elbow on the position of the tool: The axis of the head has been moved backwards so when the head turns, the tool remains at the same point. This improves accuracy, preventing sudden movements of the machine axis when the angles of the tool are changed.
  • Accessibility for machining inside corners: The arrangement of the axes allows machining of internal corners without the head colliding with the sidewall.

"Up to now 5-axis machining jobs were performed with milling heads with rotary axis at 90° (orthogonal or twist). This new milling head adds the following advantages," said the spokesperson.

  • Higher accuracy: The turning point of the cutting tool allows higher accuracy because it does not require sudden movements of the machine axis to adjust to the geometry of the surface.
  • Higher rigidity: The angle of the front head and elbow distribute the cutting forces in an optimal way to avoid direct forces over the clamping system or the axis mechanisms.
  • Greater accessibility: The smaller size of the milling head allows the head to get inside limited areas. The arrangement of the axis allows machining the internal corners without the head colliding with the sidewall.

The Zayer 30° 5-axis automatic head won the design and innovation award given by AFM, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, which organizes these awards with the support from Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC) and Bizkaian Innovation Agency (Beaz).
