EMUGE-FRANKEN USA has donated EMUGE made in the USA TOP-Cut VAR End Mills to Utah Tech University for its Modern Machining course, reaffirming its commitment to help grow a skilled workforce in America.

"Multipurpose, high performance TOP-Cut VAR end mills are industry's most versatile variable helix carbide tool solution," said a company spokesperson. "Undergraduate engineering students are able to gain first-hand experience using high-performance, industry-leading cutting tools and applying best-practice machining techniques, help to hone their critical thinking skills and prepare them for a career in the manufacturing industry."

The Modern Machining course takes a deep dive into the thermodynamics, kinematics, and materials science of machining processes intended to modernize education about machining and to build a new generation of machining scientists.

Andrew Schiller, Instructor in the Practice of Engineering at Utah Tech University, said, "Some of these students will go on to work in the machining industry and push the boundaries of what machining can accomplish, but their journey begins with key partners such as EMUGE, that gives students the opportunity to use world-class tools that few undergraduate students ever interact with."

For a Modern Machining course project, students used the EMUGE TOP-Cut VAR end mills to machine custom titanium impellers-a challenging material and complex blade geometry requiring the right tools, thoughtful workholding, and a strategic, systematic approach. As a class, students learned to work with EMUGE's technical support team and literature, establishing cutting parameters and machining strategies to achieve optimal results. Ultimately, the impellers were used in another class where students raced custom-built, electronically driven pedal boats in front of a local crowd of about 900 people.

EMUGE will continue to work with Utah Tech engineering students to test and collect data on a new line of end mills specifically designed for titanium and stainless steel.
