The Sunnen SV-3400 is the next step in the evolution of the company's SV Series, with an updated look and new user-friendly Sunnen2 controls. This medium-duty machine combines power, precision, durability, and technology to make vertical honing more economical and productive than ever, the company reported.
"Sunnen's SV-3400 Series uses a patented stroking system to produce a true vertical stroke, as well as dwell in any part of the hole, end-to-end, producing the straightest, roundest bore possible with a consistent crosshatch pattern," said a company spokesperson. "With its 6.3 kW (8.5 HP) servo spindle motor and powerful 8 kW (10.8 HP) servo stroker motor, the SV-3400 Series handles a variety of large diameter applications that require precision honing."
The SV-3400 is best suited for mid- to high-volume production in bores from 19 mm to 203 mm (.75" to 8.0") and is equipped for honing diesel liners, engine blocks, gear hobs, refrigerator and air compressors, landing gear components, large connecting rods, and hydraulic blocks and bearing sleeves, among others. This innovative solution incorporates a patented stroking system synchronized with a servo spindle system that produces a true vertical stroke and can dwell in any part of the hole, end-to-end, producing the straightest, roundest bore possible with a consistent crosshatch pattern. This functionality combined with the new easy to use and setup Sunnen2 control creates a honing solution for difficult medium to large part applications.
Sunnen2 Control System
The Windows-based Sunnen2 industrial PC control panel features a color touchscreen, easy-to-use drop-down menus, unlimited storage capacity for job set-ups, programmable custom tools, and multiple language display. It includes state-of-the-art Beckhoff electronics and a Bore Profile display that shows bore straightness throughout the cycle. An optional OPC-UA interface allows access for remote monitoring.
Four standard models are available with a variety of stroke lengths, which allows for tailoring the machine to the application. Models include standard features such as index tables and T slot tables for custom fixturing. Options such as servo and manual rollover cradles, software process control enhancements, a variety of coolant systems, and custom part fixturing help ensure part geometric and production requirements will be met. For example, the SV-3410 includes a Servo Control X-axis (1,143 mm/45" travel) that allows the honing column to traverse long parts with programming positions for multiple in-line bore honing.
For ease of set-up, the SV-3400 Series features a multi-axis hand wheel for fine-tuning the vertical stroke, honing tool position, column position (SV-3410 only) and optional cradle position. A modular platform means this system can be automated or otherwise customized to meet exact shop requirements. The wide-open door design allows full access to the work area for either manual or fully automated robotic part loading.
The SV-3400 uses a rotary tool feed system and offers a variety of tooling choices, including: GHSS, GHTS, PH, CV/CK, P20/P28, and MPS to deliver precise bores. Heavy duty vertical slide and horizontal slide guide ways offer improved performance and long, trouble-free life, the company reported. An auto lubrication system for critical components comes standard. The latest in safety technology is also standard, including a separate safety PLC, Safe Drive System, and secondary brake on the column stroking system. All models are European Machinery Directive (CE) compliant.
